August 2017 – igus will receive the Red Dot Award for innovative product design twice this year. The igus CRM, a rotary energy supply module for confined spaces and the TH3 e-chain, the world's first plastic e-chain according to Hygienic Design guidelines, were awarded the coveted prize for design quality and innovation by an international jury.

When it comes to product development, motion plastics specialist igus not only focuses on continuous improvements in material properties, but also on application-friendly and advanced design that improves technology and reduces costs. Two examples of this is the igus CRM and the Hygienic Design TH3 e-chain, which were selected for the Red Dot Award from a record number of more than 5,500 submissions, from automobiles to toothbrushes. This year, manufacturers and designers from a total of 54 nations presented their product innovations, which were judged by a jury of 39 members. The prize is one of the most recognised design contests worldwide and has been popular since 1955.

The CRM (Compact Rotation Module) from igus is an extremely compact rotary module for applications where circular movements of up to 360 degrees have to be implemented in confined spaces. Like all energy supply systems for circular movements from igus, the new CRM can also be used to provide energy, data and media, in parallel and without interruption, thus increasing machine reliability and avoiding unplanned downtimes. The module is supplied in ready-to-install condition and has a very simple installation.

The current angle of rotation can be read on a scale. The TH3 e-chain is the world's first plastic e-chain developed according to "Hygienic Design Guidelines". The open design makes the chain very easy to clean, while rounded corners and the absence of threaded-connections avoid dead spaces where germs can remain. The blue material, which is typical of plastic elements in the food industry, is also highly resistant to aggressive cleaning agents and chemicals. Thus, this e-chain is suitable for applications where the highest hygienic requirements prevail and the cables and hoses must be guided safely.
