Pilz now offers SecurityBridge, which protects controllers from manipulation and unauthorised access. If people, machinery and industrial processes are intelligently linked, these networks are also more susceptible to attack. With SecurityBridge, Pilz has expanded its product range to include the area of Industrial Security. The SecurityBridge acts as a firewall. However, unlike generic firewalls, they do not need complex configuration, thanks to application-specific default settings, they are easy to commission using the plug-and-play principle. As well as benefitting from the security aspect, users also get higher plant availability because only the data that is necessary (authorised configuration and process data) is transmitted. SecurityBridge can be placed upstream of the base unit of the PLC controller. It acts as a VPN server, via which a virtual private network (VPN) with one or more client PCs (configuration PC) can be established. The connection between PC and device is thus protected. Only suitably authorised users can make changes to a project’s configuration. This prevents unauthorised access to the protected network. The result is that the data transfer between the client PC and SecurityBridge is protected against manipulation. The SecurityBridge also controls the process data traffic and it monitors the integrity of the safety system.
As ambassadors for safety, Pilz has always been focussed to develop products from the perspective of security. Aspects such as threat scenarios, strengths and weaknesses of protocols or encryption methods are taken into consideration .Without security, the machinery safety can no longer be ensured.
